The public streetscape/infrastructure in the Downtown Historic District is aging, and in some instances deteriorating to the point where preventative/restorative action is necessary.
The City has received three Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) grants to evaluate the structural condition of the tunnel areas and repair deficient structures.
Repair of these sidewalk tunnel areas presents an opportunity to refurbish the surface/street-level public spaces in a way that creates a pedestrain-friendly, welcoming, and safe public environment that respects the historic nature and economic vitality of downtown Port Townsend.
The project team is using the Comprehensive Plan and previous planning work – including the February 2010 Historic District Planning Charrette – as foundational guidance. The project team will be seeking input from the people of Port Townsend as the design progresses throughout the remainder of 2011.
